Flower girls wandering at a private home on Valleyanna in Toronto, in the last unhurried minutes before the bridal party left for the reception at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Kids at a formal event are almost always more interesting when they are left to be themselves: exploring, getting distracted, occasionally remembering they have a job. Following them, rather than directing them, is one of the small choices that tends to make wedding photographs feel like the real day rather than a staged version of it.
It is also part of why so many of the families I photograph in Forest Hill, Rosedale, Lawrence Park, and Leaside come to me specifically for portraits of their children. The eye that catches a flower girl mid-wander on a Toronto estate is the same eye that catches a four-year-old at home in the living room: patient, low to the ground, and out of the way.
